The recently published free trade agreement between the European Union and New Zealand, featured in the Official Journal of the European Union, introduces a robust protection system for Geographical Indications (GIs) of the contracting parties. In its entirety, the accord will shield all Geographical Indications within the European Union concerning wines, spirits, and a comprehensive list of 163 designations within the food sector.

The Committee for Trade holds the authority to revise the Geographical Indications roster, allowing for potential additions. However, any augmentations to the list must not surpass 30 PDO and PGI products for each contracting party every three years, commencing from the agreement’s effective date.
