In the latest round of EU – Mercosur negotiations, protections for Geographical Indications (GIs) remained unchanged. The deal now safeguards 347 European GIs, including 58 from Italy: 26 food products, 31 wines, and a single spirit—Grappa IG.
The agreement allows for exceptions, including phased-out use of names deemed generic and limited rights for prior users of certain terms. However, strict rules apply, such as banning marketing products with labels, imagery, or symbols that evoke the protected GI.
