Gorgonzola PDO, the quintessential Italian blue cheese with roots in ancient autumnal transhumance, remains a standout in the cheese world. Today, the Gorgonzola PDO sector produces nearly 76,000 certified tons annually—33% of which is exported—supported by 1,470 operators generating 560 million euros in production value (source: Consortium for the Protection of Gorgonzola PDO cheese).
Regionally, this typical Italian cheese contributes significantly to the basket of certified food products in two Italian regions: Piedmont, with 24 Geographical Indication products valued at 354 million euros, and Lombardy, with 34 products valued at nearly two billion euros.
Since 1971, the Consortium has been dedicated to preserving and enhancing this renowned cheese, ensuring strict adherence to regulations both domestically and internationally where the “Gorgonzola” name is protected.
The recent decision to reaffirm CSQA (the Italian public certification body) as the overseer of compliance and quality control underscores a commitment to maintaining high standards across the supply chain. “Our continued role as the Control Organization for Gorgonzola PDO,” says Pietro Bonato, CEO of CSQA, “reflects our dedication to safeguarding this distinguished product, celebrated worldwide.”
Gorgonzola PDO continues to bolster the value of CSQA’s portfolio, which now encompasses 81 Geographical Indications. This reinforces the commitment to advancing high-quality agri-food supply chains, emblematic of Italy’s culinary heritage and regional pride.
