Lombardy: the cheese factory of Italy

Export sales in value and volume of Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano grew double-digit in the first quarter of 2022 and show a positive trend in the following three months as well, posting +7% in value and + 3.8% in volume. Lombardy’s GI cheeses in 2021, according to the Ismea-Qualivita Report, have a regional impact of 1,401 million euros and, in addition to Grana Padano and Parmigiano Reggiano (the latter produced in a part of the province of Mantua) are also represented by Gorgonzola. Other fine cheeses that can develop good growth potential are Provolone Valpadana Pdo and Taleggio Pdo, both of which have export values that are clearly increasing compared to 2020.
