In the latest report by the Italian research institute Ismea for the Qualivita association, the Italian PDO economy is depicted as a thriving sector, with a total worth of €20.2 billion, propelled by the PDO and PGI agri-food and wine sectors. Campania, ranking eighth in Italy, solidifies its position as the leading region in the South, boasting an economic impact of €896 million in 2022, attributed to its 58 PDO and PGI food and wine sectors.

Driven by the coordinated efforts of 9,082 operators across 22 Consortia, Campania’s PDO economy witnessed a notable surge of +9.4% in 2022, contributing 14% to the region’s overall agri-food sector. Caserta and Naples emerged as the provinces with the highest economic influence, followed by Salerno, Benevento, and Avellino. Notably, the dairy and pasta industries lead the economic charge, accounting for 54% and 30% respectively, followed by wine and fruits/vegetables at 12% and 4%.

In food production, Campania commands a substantial €793 million, experiencing a robust growth of +9.8% in 2022 compared to the previous year. Noteworthy contributors include Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO and Pasta di Gragnano PGI, followed closely by Melannurca Campana PGI and other renowned products.

On the wine front, Campania boasts a wine production value of €103 million, marking a commendable growth of +6.2% in 2022. Key denominations such as Benevento PGI and Falanghina del Sannio PDO drive the region’s wine sector, underscoring its importance in the broader economic landscape.
