Exports: is Italian wine stronger than Covid-19?

Italian wine exports are growing despite the Covid-19 pandemic. In the first two months of 2020 a new sales record was set, even though April’s figures are among the worst ever. This is confirmed by the latest Vinitaly – Nomisma Wine Monitor data. Considering the 10 top importer countries, sales of Italian wines increased by +5.1% over the same period of 2019. All this thanks to the excellent performance in the USA (+10.8%, and +40% in the first 2 months of 2020), and Canada (+7.1%). French wine sales, on the other hand, fell (-10.1%) both in the East and in the West.

Last April Italian wine sales decreased in all the markets considered, except Canada, Russia, and South Korea. In fact, exports ranged from -5.2% in Japan to -12.5% in the USA (+6.8% for sparkling wines), from -26% in Switzerland to -48% in China, for an overall drop of -7.2% (compared to -22.2% for French wines).

OUTLOOK FOR THE COMING MONTHS

According to Nomisma Observatory, in the coming months the exports crisis will continue to weigh heavily, due to a lower demand and to the disposal of unsold wine in restaurants and importers’ warehouses. Without considering the trend of EU market demand in April, which promises to be more markedly negative.
