Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco makes strides in conquering the UK market

The Consortium for the Protection of Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG reasserts its presence in the United Kingdom, embarking on a mission to unveil the revered Italian sparkling wine to discerning English traders. This strategic move is part of a comprehensive series of promotional endeavors, spearheaded by over thirty prominent companies participating in SITT – the Specialist Importers Trade Tasting, slated for Manchester and London on February 26 and 28, respectively. Since its establishment in 2005, SITT has curated interactive events featuring the distinctive walk-around tasting format, exclusively catering to trade operators, sommeliers, buyers from the independent off-trade sector, as well as wine educators and journalists.

The Consortium’s President Elvira Bortolomiol affirms, “We take pride in revisiting the UK through this initiative, providing a platform to engage with high-profile stakeholders who appreciate premium quality productions.” Notably, the British market stands as a pivotal export destination, emerging as the leading importer with a notable 10.3 million bottles and an impressive €55.9 million in value in 2022. These figures signify a robust growth of +7% and +11.3%, respectively, compared to 2021. Moreover, the enduring success story unfolds over the long term, with volumes experiencing a staggering growth of more than 23 times since 2003.

The SITT events are set to showcase an institutional tasting counter exclusively dedicated to Conegliano Valdobbiadene. Featuring a comprehensive selection, the tastings will spotlight 60 distinct wines from this denomination. Complementing this, a masterclass on Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG is on the agenda, centering on the nuanced theme of territorial selections, particularly Rive and Cartizze. This session will also delve into the intricacies of food and wine pairing, spearheaded by the esteemed Master of Wine, Sarah Abbott.

Looking ahead, the Consortium has slated its participation in the London Wine Fair from May 20 to 22, featuring yet another masterclass conducted by Sarah Abbott MW. Additionally, a noteworthy collaboration will be renewed with the prestigious Plumpton College in early September. This collaboration aligns with a day dedicated to in-depth exploration and tasting, focusing on the Martinotti method and the Sui Lieviti category. The event targets college students, industry operators, press representatives, and local producers, featuring a masterclass led by Consortium’s Director Diego Tomasi.
