In the first half of 2024, production of Mortadella Bologna PGI reached 19 million kilograms, with nearly 16 million kilograms sold. Compared to the same period in 2023, production edged up by 0.6%, while sales grew by 2.2%. Sales of pre-sliced, packaged mortadella in trays saw robust growth, rising 7%, reflecting consumer demand for convenience.
Exports, which account for 22% of total sales, increased by 8.7%. France and Germany remained the largest markets, holding 29.8% and 23.6% of exports, respectively. France also posted the strongest growth, up 14.6%, followed by Spain at 7.6% and Germany at 2.1%.
“Given the current economic slowdown, we are pleased with the results from the first half of this year, driven by strong export demand and solid domestic sales of pre-sliced products,” said Guido Veroni, President of the Italian Consortium for the Protection of Mortadella Bologna PGI. “This growth underscores the appeal of Mortadella Bologna PGI as a comforting, crisis-resistant product that resonates with consumers.”
These figures are part of the “DELI M.E.A.T. Delicious Moments European Authentic Taste” initiative, a promotional campaign co-financed by the European Union. The project, which promotes Mortadella Bologna PGI, Salamini Italiani alla Cacciatora PDO, Zampone Modena PGI, and Cotechino Modena PGI, targets the Italian and French markets.
