Following the recent inclusion in the Italian list of Food Districts, the new Aceto Balsamico di Modena PGI (Balsamic Vinegar of Modena) Food District has been established. The goals are the promotion, development, and protection of the product, as well as the enhancement of the supply chain, culture, and tradition of the Modena and Reggio–Emilia territories.
The protection Consortium of Aceto Balsamico di Modena PGI gave the news. Thanks to this recognition, the Consortium, in its capacity as a Food District, will extend its competencies to include policies for the promotion and enhancement of the territory, agri-food production, and the entire production chain.
“This is an achievement of great importance for our industry,” Mariangela Grosoli, President of the Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI Consortium, comments, “which represents a well-deserved recognition of the economic, cultural, and traditional value of our product and its role within the Italian food system.”
Balsamic Vinegar of Modena is the fifth Italian agri-food product with Geographical Indication by production value (source: Consortium for the protection of Aceto Balsamico di Modena, 2021). It contributes 100 million liters of certified production to Italian food production, capable of generating 400 million euros of production value, translated into one billion euros of consumer value. This is also thanks to the value generated by the product destined for exports, whose share is 92 percent of the total.
