Last year, salami proved to be the superstar of Italian cured meat exports. According to the findings of Assica (the Italian association of meat and cured meat industries), the positive trend in 2021 allowed this product to largely recover the drop in 2020, as well as to gain +31.4% in value compared to 2019 (before the pandemic).

Exports to EU countries, with 28,830 tons or 289.3 million euros, reached +15.8% in volumes and +10.9% in value. All major markets were up: Germany (+8.4% in volume and +3.7% in value, respectively), France (+11.6%, +8.9%), Belgium (+40.5%, +29.1%), Sweden (+12.7%, +11%), and Austria (+10.2%, +2.9%).

ITALIAN SALAMI SALES SKYROCKETING IN THE US
Italian salami exports to non-EU countries achieved record growth rates during 2021. In fact, the year ended with an average increase of +25.9% in volume and +20.9% in value. The highlight is the US: +132.5 percent or 1,621 tons in volume, and +99.3 percent or 14.7 million in value. Good performance also in the United Kingdom (+8.4%, +2.7%), the leading market, as well as in Switzerland (+7.9%, +3.9%), and Canada (+226.8%, +401%). Not to mention Brazil (+23.3%, +47%). In contrast, the export trend was negative in Japan (-2.4%, -5.5%), and Hong Kong (-16.6%, -24.8%).
