HOW GORGONZOLA PDO EXPORTS ARE GROWING
Together with Grana Padano PDO and Parmigiano Reggiano PDO, Gorgonzola is one of the most famous cheeses in the world, and is also lactose-free
When it comes to Italian PDO cheeses’ exports, Gorgonzola PDO comes once again in third position (in volume) among cow milk cheese, after Grana Padano PDO and Parmigiano Reggiano PDO. In 2019, 1,866,000 wheels (equal to 22,394 tons) have been sold abroad; sales grew by +3.8% compared to 2018.
About 87% of exported production has been sold in EU countries, as exports to non-EU countries have slightly fallen.
The top importer countries are Germany, France, Spain, the UK and the Netherlands. The top non-EU market is Japan, followed by the United States.
NEWS FROM THE CONSORTIUM
The Board of the Consortium for the protection of Gorgonzola PDO cheese has recently appointed the new corporate offices that include the president and vice presidents. Antonio Auricchio was appointed president, and is going to hold the position that the outgoing president Renato Invernizzi has held for the last 12 years.
In 2020 the Consortium has just celebrated its 50 years of activity. A celebration that took place in silence as a sign of respect for the victims of Covid-19 pandemic, which in Lombardy, the home of Gorgonzola cheese, were many.
“Gorgonzola PDO is a modern product – says Auricchio – appreciated not only in Italy and Europe but all over the world. We producers will try to make its success become bigger and bigger, defending this great Italian PDO cheese against counterfeiting.”
The production comes from 39 member companies, assisted by about 1,800 farms based in the Consortium territory, across Piedmont and Lombardy: in particular, over two thirds of the production is concentrated in the Piedmontese provinces.
