Grana Padano PDO: the secret to 2019’s exports boom

In 2019 Grana Padano PDO continued to grow, both in terms of production and export sales. The typical Italian cheese is confirmed as the most consumed PDO product in the world with a total production of 5,164,759 cheese wheels (+4.70% compared to 2018), 2,051,125 of which are destined for exports (+4.38%).

Following the Covid-19 pandemic emergency, however, it is necessary to reflect on the changing trends in lifestyles. The 2020 figures are likely to be much less positive than 2019’s. The main goal now is to contain production in order to adapt to the inevitable drop in consumption due to the contraction of the Ho.Re.Ca. channel.

For this reasons, the board of directors of the Grana Padano PDO protection Consortium has decided:

  • Decrease in production;
  • Support for charitable organizations;
  • Purchase of 120,000 cheese wheels for the November-December 2019 and January-February-March 2020 periods. These wheels will be matured to become Grana Padano Riserva 20 Mesi and Grana Padano Riserva Gold 24 Mesi.
