High-quality goes a long way: discovering Salumi Piacentini PDO

Salumi Piacentini PDO production has been stable in 2019, compared to the previous year. The increase in production of Salame Piacentino PDO (+9.3%), the substantial stability of Pancetta Piacentina PDO (-0.7%), and the drop of Coppa Piacentina PDO (-9%) resulted in a stable and consolidated production level.

This result has had a positive effect on the whole supply chain that is strongly linked to the territory of Piacenza. The certified production system of Salumi Piacentini PDO includes about 2,000 employee considering in pig farms, slaughterhouses, production staff and sales agents. The total turnover of the three PDO cured meats from Piacenza has reached about 30 million euros on the domestic market. To date, the Consortium for the protection of Salumi Piacentini PDO associates 11 of the most important companies in the sector.

In 2019, the three Salumi Piacentini PDO product ranges have attracted a growing attention on the market from large commercial chains, deli stores, catering sector and food and wine based tourism. This helped to overcome a generally difficult economic situation. The protection Consortium is planning to carry out more actions to increase knowledge and information on these products.

From 2000 to 2019, the overall production of these three Piacenza’s PDO cured meats increased significantly: +602% for Coppa Piacentina PDO, +1001% for Pancetta Piacentina PDO, and +465 % for Salame Piacentino PDO. Moreover, several member companies have also been able to invest in the expansion of production facilities and cutting edge technological systems.
