Tonitto 1939, an Italian company renowned for its packaged gelatos and sorbets, has claimed victory at the 2024 edition of the Great Taste Awards in London. Its Simply Better Italian sorbet line, developed for the Irish retail chain Dunnes Stores, won four accolades.
A leader in Italy for sorbets and sugar-free gelatos, Tonitto 1939 was recognized at the prestigious Great Taste Awards, organized by The Guild of Fine Food. The awards, which have become a global benchmark for culinary excellence, assign 1, 2, or 3 stars to winning products, based on criteria such as flavor, aroma, and texture. Over the past three decades, over 120,000 products have been evaluated through this rigorous judging process, which spans 60 days.
Tonitto 1939’s sorbets were assessed by a panel of over 500 experts, including chefs, buyers, food critics, and retailers. The company’s Italian Mixed Berry Sorbet earned 1 star, its Italian Lemon Sorbet took 2 stars, while both the Italian Mango & Passion Fruit Sorbet and the Italian Raspberry Sorbet achieved the top accolade of 3 stars.
Sorbets are the cornerstone of Tonitto 1939’s portfolio, which includes private-label products sold across Italy and all over the world. The Dovo family, which has been running the company for three generations, uses a simple recipe of fruit, water, and sugar—free from milk, preservatives, and GMOs. The fruit is carefully sourced and processed slowly to achieve a smooth, natural-tasting texture.
