In the first nine months of 2023, production figures for Mortadella Bologna PGI reached an impressive 28.8 million kg, with sales exceeding 25 million kg. A comparative analysis against the same period in 2022 reveals an uptick of +5% in production and a parallel increase of +4% in sales, as per data from IFCQ certifications. Notably, the segmented offering in trays asserts a decade-long trajectory of sustained sales growth, culminating in a notable surge of +7.9%. This substantiates the discernible consumer preference for a format that combines convenience, practicality, and easy replenishment.

About 20.4% of total sales is earmarked for exports, primarily directed towards EU markets. France and Germany emerge as pivotal markets, commanding shares of 30% and 25%, respectively. The EU market, at large, witnesses a robust surge of +9.8% in sales compared to the corresponding period in 2022. Of particular significance are the double-digit spikes in Mortadella Bologna PGI exports to Germany and Spain, logging increases of +17.3% and +13%, respectively, vis-à-vis the initial nine months of 2022.

Guido Veroni, President of the Consortium for the Protection of Mortadella Bologna PGI, expresses pride in these achievements, highlighting their “resilience amid the backdrop of sluggish mass-market product growth in Europe, as evidenced by the tepid uptrend in deli products (+1.9% – source: NielsenIQ). Mortadella Bologna PGI continues to chart an unwavering growth trajectory both domestically and abroad,” Veroni says.
