Italian breakfast is the healthiest, experts say

Made in Italy is a mark of excellence and quality, also when it comes to breakfast. According to analysts, the breakfast table of Italians is the most balanced in the calorie ratio and the right choice of foods. Moreover, it is the one that gives the body the greatest health and energy benefits.

Whether it is a bite-sized breakfast or a long one, experts say it is crucial never to skip it. Recent studies, in fact, have established that breakfast is really the most important meal of the day. If well balanced in its caloric-nutritional component, it gives the body the energy it needs to face the day with the right charge. Up to 91 percent of Italians are convinced of this, according to analysis by the Eumetra Institute for the food industries association Unione Italiana Food.

For more than 3 out of 4 Italians, improving breakfast is among their good resolutions for 2022. Most say they want to eat more leisurely (42 percent), but also to spend more time preparing this meal (10 percent). During the first pandemic shutdown, one in three Italians rediscovered the value of breakfast with their family or partner, and 28% devoted more time to the first meal of the day, with a peak of 35% in the 18-34 age group.

All nutrition experts agree that it is necessary to bring a seasonal fruit to the table every morning. Fresh fruit, along with solid and liquid foods, should be eaten daily to provide the body with all essential nutrients and energy. In the past two years the eating habits of Italians have also changed, and they have associated the classic morning foods – coffee, tea, water, fruit juices, jam, and cereals – with an increased consumption of fruit, especially by seeking out foods rich in vitamin C.

Thanks to its mix of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, simple sugars, and lipids, Italian breakfast ensures the right caloric intake, boosting metabolism and reactivating all energy components. Alongside the right choices in nutrition, experts agree that in the post-pandemic period breakfast has become the right time to rediscover the importance of this healthy and fundamental eating habit.
