Italy to postpone sugar tax to 2022

New postponement in sight for the sugar tax in Italy. In fact, the tax which will impact particularly on soft drinks is about to be postponed from July 1, 2021, as provided for in the original text of the Italian budget law, to January 1, 2022.

It would thus be accepted the request of Assobibe, the Italian association that brings together the producers of soft drinks. The combined effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and sugar tax would have caused a drop in turnover of 40% on average. “The requests of a sector strongly affected in 2020 have been heard” – explains the president of Assobibe, Giangiacomo Pierini. “The postponement is very important given that next year we will not yet see any recovery in consumption, particularly in the out-of-home sector.”
