The appetite for Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO grew in 2024, but exports took a hit. These findings come from the latest industry report by the Protection Consortium, unveiled at the “Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO: Towards the Future” conference at the Caserta (Campania) Chamber of Commerce.
Production reached 55.72 million kilograms, a modest 0.23% increase from 2023. A year-end surge helped offset economic headwinds, notably in exports, which fell from 38.3% of total output in 2023 to 36.8% in 2024. France remained the leading importer, increasing its share from 29% to 31.8%, now accounting for nearly a third of all exports. Germany followed, rising from 15.7% to 18.1%, while Spain climbed from 5.1% to 8.1%.
New players entered the market, with Norway and Thailand appearing in export data for the first time. Looking ahead, promising growth areas include Eastern Europe, Mexico, and Asia, spanning from the UAE to Singapore and Malaysia.

MOZZARELLA DI BUFALA CAMPANA PDO’S STRATEGIC PLANS FOR 2025
“It has been a year of contrasts,” said Domenico Raimondo, President of the Protection Consortium. “Despite global challenges and sluggish consumer spending, the sector held firm, posting results largely in line with 2023. Now, we must plan decisively to navigate shifting market dynamics.”
The Consortium is set to roll out a €1 million promotional campaign in 2025, targeting key European markets—France, Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands. In partnership with the Ricotta di Bufala Campana PDO Protection Consortium and the Prosciutto di San Daniele PDO Consortium, the initiative aims to bolster global recognition of Mozzarella di Bufala PDO.
Plans include international seminars backed by embassies, consulates, and the Italian Trade Agency, alongside industry events aimed at positioning mozzarella in trendy European venues. Launching in spring, the campaign will run throughout 2025, supported by a market research initiative led by Nomisma to decode consumer habits.
The Consortium will also ramp up its presence at international trade shows, with two key stops in the United States: Pizza Expo in Las Vegas and the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York.
