Pecorino Romano PDO Sets Sights on Canadian Market

The Consortium for the Protection of Pecorino Romano PDO is rolling out a new international campaign to expand the presence of the famed Italian cheese in Canada. The organization has begun drafting an information and marketing program to strengthen the product’s image, competitiveness, and consumer appeal.

Based in Macomer, Sardinia, and led by President Gianni Maoddi, the Consortium’s efforts align with the European Union’s broader strategy to promote its agri-food products abroad. A key priority is educating Canadian consumers about the EU’s strict designation of origin system, which guarantees quality and food safety—standards embodied by Pecorino Romano PDO.

The initiative also seeks to counter the rising threat of Italian-sounding imitations—products that mimic the branding of authentic Italian cheeses but fail to match their quality or nutritional value. These knock-offs not only mislead consumers but also undermine the economic sustainability of traditional production regions.

Renowned worldwide, Pecorino Romano PDO is gearing up for its next challenge: securing a stronger foothold in the Canadian market.
