Sales of Mortadella Bologna PGI reached nearly 25.5 million kilograms in the first nine months of 2024, marking a 1.2% increase compared to the same period in 2023, according to IFCQ certifications. Pre-sliced mortadella in trays performed particularly well, with sales rising by 3.8%, reflecting strong consumer demand for convenience.
Exports, which account for 22.2% of total sales, grew by an impressive 5.2%. The UK led the way with a 10.5% surge, followed by Spain (+7.6%) and France (+6.1%)—markets where the Consortium for the Protection of Mortadella Bologna PGI has invested heavily in promotional campaigns targeting both opinion leaders and consumers. According to Guido Veroni, President of the Consortium:
“We are pleased with the results achieved in the first nine months, as they confirm the sales and export growth observed earlier this year. This suggests structural factors at play: the perceived value of Mortadella Bologna PGI remains robust and resilient to external challenges.”
The publication of these figures forms part of the “Deli M.E.A.T. Delicious Moments European Authentic Taste” initiative, a promotional program backed by three Consortia to champion PDO and PGI deli meats. The campaign aims to boost awareness, competitiveness, and informed consumption of Mortadella Bologna PGI, Salamini Italiani alla Cacciatora PDO, Zampone Modena PGI, and Cotechino Modena PGI in Italy and France.
