The second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has dealt a severe blow to world economy, but the exports of Italian food and beverage is holding up also thanks to versatile and not-so-much-expensive products such as pasta and rice. These are the conclusions of an analysis by Italy’s food industries association Federalimentare based on Istat data.

The exports of the Italian food industry in the world tell us a lot about how Italian excellence is received abroad, which foods are the most in demand and also future trends. The two more traditional and convenient foods of the Mediterranean diet help to fill the shopping cart. In fact, growth in sales in the first 10 months of 2020 was equal to +15.6% for pasta and +12% for rice.

At the same time wine sales (-8.4% in value) and mineral water’s (-8.5% in value) are falling. According to Federalimentare, this is due to the fact that the Ho. Re. Ca. channel is still closed all over the world.
