Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco PDO is one of the most loved Italian wines and among the most exported all over the world. This is why the district of Conegliano (Treviso) is studying the possibility of optimizing logistics by using container trains, instead of trucks, to reach the ports of Genoa and Venice.
At the moment only 23% of wine-producing companies in the Veneto region have chosen inter-modal transports (truck+train) to export their products. However, in the coming future high frequency rail transport will be a choice dictated by speed (less congested roads) and costs.

CONEGLIANO VALDOBBIADENE PROSECCO PDO EXPORTS DURING COVID-19 TIME
So far, inter-modal rail transport has facilitated the exports of Italian products by limiting the use of drivers as well as the problems linked to the Covid-19 pandemic. According to experts, rail freight will remain essential in the so-called phase 2, i.e. the partial restart of Italy’s production ativities after lockdown.
A recent Contship/Srm study on the efficiency of the Italian logistics reserves an in-depth study for the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco PDO district. This area exports wines for a value of over 500 million euros per year. For the majority of producers (85%) the main destination market is North America. Europe accounts for 31%, and Asia for 15% – with Japan as the favorite destination. According to the study, 62% of companies in the district export no more than 50 containers each year, while 38% exceed this limit.
