Gorgonzola PDO obtains trademark protection in the UK

In light of the coming into force of Brexit, the protection Consortium applied well in advance and obtained the “Grant of Protection from UKIPO

The Consortium for the Protection of Gorgonzola PDO cheese has acted well in advance of Brexit, to continue to have protection for the iconic Italian blue cheese in the United Kingdom. In fact, last year it obtained the “Grant of Protection” from UKIPO (the UK Government Intellectual Property Office), in addition to the collective CG mark.

At the end of January, Brexit led to a change in the agreements on the protection of registered trademarks and the imports of PDO products from other countries. Currently, the protection of PDO and PGI trademarks is guaranteed by EU regulations for the countries present in Europe. So that an Italian name enjoys the same protection within all the countries of the Union. Now the United Kingdom will have to create a new control body, allowing the import of PDO products with new rules that are still being defined.

A GUARANTEE FOR CONSUMERS OF GORGONZOLA PDO CHEESE

The final registration of the trademark is therefore a guarantee for consumers to protect them from counterfeiting when buying Italian Gorgonzola PDO cheese abroad. This will guarantee producers as well. In fact, the protection will continue to strengthen the sales activity in the UK, which for many years has been among the Gorgonzola PDO top consumer countries.

Currently, the United Kingdom is the fourth largest importer of Gorgonzola PDO, with a volume of over 1100 tonnes and a turnover of over 7 million euros.
