Coop Suisse: more focused on organic food

With over 2.5 million members, and a 2015 overall turnover in excess of €25 billion, Coop Suisse is by far the second biggest player in the Swiss retail sector, immediately following Migros. With about 2,200 stores (530 of which are convenience stores), 200 supermarkets, and 31 hypermarkets under the Coop Megastore brand, it ensures a widespread presence on the entire national territory. The grocery offer includes over 40,000 items, including both brand-name and own label products, and it is aimed at all price ranges making it the most comprehensive nationwide. Considerable space is devoted to organic and sustainable food ranges, which are both a truly distinctive element of the chain’s offer and the main driver for future development strategies. Not surprisingly, in Switzerland Coop is the organic food market leader, accounting for almost half of the total sales. Its turnover, currently standing at one billion euro, has been growing rapidly for a few years. It boasts a grocery assortment of over 2,800 items, which was recently expanded to meet the needs of various consumers types and not only those with a higher purchasing power. Over the past few years, the company has added a number of organic, regional and vegetarian own label brands and has recently signed a distribution agreement with Berlin based vegan supermarket chain Veganz.
