Ferrero is significantly expanding its iconic Nutella brand, bringing its signature hazelnut spread into the frozen breakfast category. The Italian confectionery giant recently announced plans to launch a new, premium product in the United States next spring: a frozen waffle with a creamy Nutella filling. This strategic move aims to invigorate a market segment that has historically lacked meaningful innovation, according to company executives interviewed by Food Dive.
Disrupting the frozen aisle
The frozen waffle market remains the second-largest segment within the broader frozen breakfast category, traditionally dominated by Eggo and various private-label options. However, Michael Lindsey, President and Chief business officer for Ferrero North America, notes that the current landscape is saturated with cost-focused offerings that often overlook product quality. The introduction of this new premium product seeks to transform a breakfast staple into a more enjoyable and high-quality occasion.
Strategic brand growth
This initiative marks a return to the brand’s breakfast roots while leveraging its strong global presence. Ferrero has already successfully introduced frozen crepes and donuts in Europe, demonstrating that the extension of the Nutella brand effectively attracts new consumer demographics. Looking ahead, the company is already exploring further expansion opportunities, with a potential pipeline that may include new waffle flavors and even the possibility of entering the pancake segment, which was thoroughly evaluated during the development phase.
Since entering the U.S. market in 2009, Ferrero has consistently worked to position its hazelnut spread as an all-day versatile option. This latest innovation follows a string of successful launches, including Nutella & Go, Nutella B-Ready, Nutella Peanut, and Nutella ice cream, as the brand continues to diversify its footprint across the retail landscape.
