Over the past decade, global exports of food and beverage products—excluding agricultural raw materials and tobacco—have surged by 76%, surpassing a total value of $1.43 trillion. Italy has firmly established itself as a global powerhouse, securing sixth place in the worldwide ranking with a market share of 4.7%, valued at over $67 billion.

A dominant force in quality

According to data highlighted by the Nomisma research firm, the Italian growth trajectory has outpaced all major international competitors, registering a remarkable +109% increase over the last ten years. Even in a complex geopolitical landscape marked by trade tensions and supply chain uncertainties, the reputation of Made-in-Italy food products remains an unmatched benchmark for excellence.

Sector performance and global leadership

Italy’s export success is anchored by its undisputed leadership in specific sectors. The nation dominates the global pasta market with nearly a 28% share, while maintaining a strong presence in wine, dairy, and olive oil. Furthermore, new product categories are showing promising growth: baked goods saw their share rise from 6.4% in 2015 to 8.2% in 2025, alongside steady gains in chocolate, vegetable preserves, and coffee.

The competitive landscape

While Italy maintains its dominance, the competitive landscape is shifting. Poland has emerged as a formidable challenger, growing its food exports by 169% over the decade. Emerging markets like South Korea are also intensifying pressure in the pasta sector, where their export share has jumped from under 4% to 10%. Nevertheless, the diversification of the Italian export assortment—with eight core categories accounting for 63% of the total—provides a solid foundation for continued success in the international marketplace.
