In 2024, sales of organic food products in Italy surpassed €6.5 billion, while Italian organic agri-food exports continued their upward trajectory, reaching €3.9 billion—a 7% increase compared to 2023. These key figures were presented by Nomisma at the Sana Food 2025 – Rivoluzione Bio 2025 fair in BolognaFiere, during the industry’s premier event organized in collaboration with producer associations FederBio and AssoBio.
ITALY’S ORGANIC EXPORT SUCCESS
Exports of Italian organic agri-food products performed strongly in 2024, with a 7% rise bringing the total to €3.9 billion, in line with the overall positive trend across the agri-food sector.
Nomisma’s survey of 336 Italian companies identified Germany, France, Scandinavia, the Benelux countries, and the United States as the main export destinations for Italian organic products. The outlook for Italian organic exports remains robust, with around one-third of Italian food & beverage companies that do not currently export organic products planning to enter foreign markets within the next two to three years.
Italy remains a top producer of high-quality organic products, with consumers in key international markets consistently associating the country with premium organic food. In the US, for instance, 45% of consumers link Italy with high-quality organic offerings. Demand for Italian organic products is also strong across Europe, with foreign interest ranging from 23% in the Benelux region to 85% in the Nordics.
“The positive growth in organic products reflects increasing consumer awareness of the importance of responsible food choices, for health and environmental reasons,” said Maria Grazia Mammuccini, President of FederBio. “A significant boost will come from the ‘Italian Organic’ label, which not only enhances product visibility in global markets but also strengthens the recognition of farmers, fostering collaboration across production, processing, and distribution.”
