Berlin is a key step in our internationalization strategy, one of Europe’s most promising markets for Sicily’s prized ‘red gold,’” said Sebastiano Fortunato, President of the Consortium for the Protection of Pomodoro di Pachino PGI. From yesterday until February 7, the Consortium is participating in the 2025 edition of Fruit Logistica, the leading international trade show dedicated to fruits and vegetables, in the German capital. It has a dedicated space within the Sicily Region’s pavilion (Hall 4.2, Stand C 40).

Fruit Logistica is a prestigious event that provides a platform to forge and strengthen critical commercial ties and institutional relationships,” Fortunato emphasized, reflecting on the success of initiatives carried out both domestically and internationally. This includes a recent exploratory trip to Spain, where the Consortium observed local industry practices firsthand.

After a dip in prices toward the end of 2024, the start of 2025 has brought a welcome rebound for Pomodoro di Pachino PGI, raising optimism for the months ahead. The Consortium’s focus remains firmly on international expansion. Currently, exports account for less than 10% of total production, “partly due to baseless trade restrictions imposed by major markets like Canada and the United States, and unfair competition from non-EU countries,” said Fortunato. “We are working to bring these issues to the forefront of key institutional discussions to resolve them once and for all.”
