Piadina Romagnola PGI: new specification for new options

Flour, water, salt, and lard or olive oil: these are the simple ingredients that, properly kneaded, give life to Piadina Romagnola PGI, a symbolic product of Romagna. Nine years ago, the protection Consortium obtained PGI certification from the European Commission, with the goal of enhancing the product and protecting it from the risks of counterfeiting.

Acknowledging proposals, indications, and requests arrived from many small producers in the area of origin, with a new specification comes the possibility of introducing some variations in the ingredients, which have now become an integral part of the production of Piadina Romagnola PGI. First on the flour front, with the possibility of using spelt flours as well. In addition, optional raw materials such as cow’s milk, flower honey, and sunflower seed oil can be used.

PROMOTIONAL CAMPAIGN ABROAD

In essence, Piadina Romagnola PGI becomes as inclusive as its land of origin, which has always been dedicated to hospitality. In the sign of conviviality is also the Piadina Romagnola & Friends three-year promotion project, which includes activities (for €1.8m) both in the Italian and German markets. These range from digital communication (social and influencer marketing) to television and public relations activities, including the Piadina Romagnola & Friend Tour and in-store promotions. Piadina will also be in New York at the end of June during the Summer Fancy Food Show’s 2023 edition.

Alfio Biagini, President of the protection Consortium, says: “The new specification has long been adopted by many kiosks, and the recognition should be seen as a further enrichment for Piadina Romagnola PGI: an inclusive product, like its land which has always been a place of hospitality.
