Italian gelato leader Tonitto 1939 is setting its sights on Central and South America to achieve year-round business stability. Following the successful introduction of its products in Peru, the Ligurian company is now finalizing distribution in Chile and Mexico, with strategic plans to enter Brazil, Costa Rica, and Panama by 2027. This expansion is central to the firm’s broader internationalization strategy, which aims to increase the weight of the Latin American market to 15% of its total export turnover within three years.
Leveraging reverse seasonality
For Tonitto 1939, the Americas are more than just new growth; they offer a crucial opportunity for complementarity with European demand. By scheduling shipments in October and November to cater to the Southern Hemisphere’s peak summer season, the company can effectively offset the traditional slowdown in the Italian market during the winter months. “Export becomes a lever to build a more balanced business throughout the year,” explains Simone Furlan, Export Sales Manager at Tonitto 1939.
The power of authentic Italian gelato
In Latin American markets, Tonitto is focusing on the strength of its Made in Italy heritage. Initial shipments feature flagship lines such as Coppa Famiglia, sorbets, and Yo-Yo snacks, building a solid foundation before introducing high-protein and sugar-free innovations. This approach aligns with a local trend toward ‘premiumization’ and a growing awareness of nutritional profiles, bolstered by regional labeling standards like ‘warning octagons’ that favor healthier food choices.
The company’s growth is also supported by the Iconic Italian Gelato Brand project, a strategic partnership with other prominent Italian food manufacturers including Bauli, Vicenzi, and Sperlari. By leveraging existing distribution networks, Tonitto 1939 intends to build stable, long-term partnerships that solidify its presence as a key player in the vibrant LATAM region.
