Barilla has introduced a new addition to its pesto range, blending 100% Italian basil with Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO—a reinterpretation of the traditional condiment to appeal to evolving consumer tastes. The new recipe offers a smooth, creamy texture that enhances everyday meals while maintaining ties to classic Italian culinary tradition.
The launch reflects a broader trend identified by consumer insights firm WGSN, which describes modern indulgence as “a reimagining of traditional flavours through a contemporary lens, with an emphasis on personal well-being, creativity in the kitchen, and the use of high-quality, authentic ingredients.”
The combination of two distinctly Italian ingredients—fresh basil and the delicately flavoured Mozzarella di Bufala—offers a richer, more velvety pesto, providing a new take on a pantry staple. “We’re proud to present a surprising and innovative recipe that aligns with current trends while remaining true to our heritage,” said Matteo Gori, President of Barilla’s Sauces Division. “Our new pesto is what all great culinary discoveries should be—creamy, bold, and unexpected.”
With growing consumer focus on sustainability and ethical sourcing, Barilla emphasises that the new pesto continues the brand’s commitment to responsible production. Each jar contains basil sourced exclusively from sustainable Italian farms and is produced using Barilla’s proprietary Delicato method, which preserves the ingredient’s natural aroma, vibrant colour, and fresh flavour.
While traditionally used with pasta, the new pesto is designed for versatility. It can be served on toasted bread, stirred into soups, or paired with grilled vegetables, broadening its appeal beyond the conventional plate.
