Italy’s cheese exports to Japan reached 12,700 tonnes in 2024, a 14% increase year-on-year, according to AfiDop, the association representing Italian PDO and PGI cheeses. The total export value rose to €106.9mn, up 1.1% from the previous year, as Japanese demand for premium dairy products continued to grow.

2024 was an exceptionally strong year for our exports to Japan,” said Antonio Auricchio, president of AfiDop and the Gorgonzola PDO Consortium. “Despite the yen’s depreciation against foreign currencies in 2023, Japanese consumers remain loyal to our PDO cheeses. This is driven by their diverse textures and flavors, culinary versatility, and the enduring appeal of Made in Italy, which represents quality, tradition, and authenticity.”

Building on this momentum, the Gorgonzola PDO Consortium took part in Foodex Japan, the country’s largest agri-food trade show held in March. Industry buyers and professionals showed a marked preference for Gorgonzola Dolce over the sharper Piccante variety, a shift from previous years.

Beyond the fair, promotional efforts extended to a high-profile event at the Italian Embassy in Tokyo. The “Italian Aperitivo” evening, hosted by the Italian Trade Agency and Fiere di Parma, brought together business leaders and diplomats, including Italian Ambassador Gianluigi Benedetti. Speaking at the event, Auricchio underscored the global potential of Italian cheeses. “Looking ahead,” he said, “we see significant growth opportunities in Japan.”
