Provolone Valpadana PDO recorded a year of robust growth in 2024, with gains in production, domestic sales, and exports, according to data released by its Protection Consortium.
Production rose by 5.8% compared with 2023, reinforcing the cheese’s position as a key player in Italy’s dairy sector, underpinned by its heritage and quality. Domestic sales also gained momentum, increasing by 6%, while exports posted even stronger growth. Between January and October 2024, overseas shipments climbed 13.5% year-on-year, driven by demand in both European and non-EU markets.
Spain retained its position as the leading European destination for Provolone Valpadana PDO, while Australia emerged as the top non-EU market. The performance reflects broader momentum in Italy’s dairy industry, with national cheese exports rising 11% in value during the first half of the year, according to industry body Ismea.
“The quality and tradition of Provolone Valpadana PDO remain the foundation of our success,” said Giovanni Guarneri, president of the Consortium. “We will continue to uphold excellence while expanding our global reach.” He credited production growth to the sector’s ability to balance technological innovation with time-honored methods, ensuring authenticity and safety for consumers.
The acceleration in exports beyond the EU has reinforced Italy’s position as a leading force in the global cheese market, as the industry capitalizes on rising international demand for high-quality, traditionally made dairy products.
