With Donald Trump’s return to the White House, fears are mounting over the reimposition of U.S. tariffs on European imports. This concern extends to the Consortium for the Protection of Prosciutto San Daniele PDO, a key player in Italy’s charcuterie industry. The U.S. remains a vital market for the product: last year, exports saw a significant surge (+19.6%) compared to 2023, reinforcing its position as the top destination, alongside France. As the Consortium notes, this underscores “the importance of U.S. exports for the entire supply chain and the region’s economic and social fabric.”
Proposed tariffs could threaten the competitiveness of Prosciutto San Daniele PDO, impacting not just producers but also American consumers, who might be deprived of premium Italian goods in favor of inferior substitutes.
“We remain hopeful that dialogue between Italian, European, and U.S. officials will yield solutions to prevent punitive trade measures and protect the longstanding relationship between Prosciutto San Daniele PDO and the U.S. market. In the meantime, we will continue promoting the product in the U.S., advocating for free trade,” said Mario Emilio Cichetti, General Director of the Consortium.
