EXPLORING 6 TOP TRENDS

The first trend, All Local, comprises products and ingredients certified as PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) or PGI (Protected Geographical Indication), or sourced 100% from Italian and/or regional origins.

The second trend, Back to Nature, includes minimally processed, all-natural, and organic foods, as well as those with zero residues. This cluster also encompasses plant-based and vegetarian products.

The third trend, Comfort First, emphasizes food as synonymous with gratification and hedonistic pleasure, encompassing indulgent products such as sweets and desserts but also savory treats.

The fourth trend, Health & Wellness, encompasses products that enhance mental and physical wellbeing, including protein-rich foods, supplements, nutraceuticals, and free-from products (gluten, sugar, lactose, GMOs, etc.).

The fifth trend, Horeca Revolution, focuses on products tailored for the out-of-home channel, an industry experiencing year-on-year growth. According to the annual Deloitte Italian Cuisine Market Monitor Report, the global foodservice turnover reached €2.62 trillion in 2022, with Italian cuisine accounting for €228 billion, growing by 11.1%, and representing 20% of the global full-service restaurant market.

The final trend, Taste of the World, encompasses both traditional ethnic cuisine and products with exotic influences or inspired by other culinary traditions.

Some of these trends are gaining global traction, as evidenced by Mintel’s analysis for 2024. With a focus on sensory gratification, the four main trends offer valuable insights for food and beverage companies seeking to strategically address global market challenges and rapid shifts in consumer behavior, leveraging new technologies.
