In the period spanning from July 10 to August 6, 2023, the French supermarket chain E. Leclerc demonstrated remarkable prowess by amassing a 1.8 percentage point surge in market share, measured by volume. This performance surpassed even its impressive growth in terms of value, which stood at +1.4%.

Kantar Worldpanel’s data underscores E. Leclerc’s dominance, with the company commanding nearly a quarter of France’s food consumption by volume during the same period, securing an overall market share of 24.2%. In an era where manufacturers and select distributors grapple with dwindling volume sales due to inflationary pressures, and amid concerns of a looming ‘consumption downturn,’ E. Leclerc’s acquisition of additional volumes is a commendable feat.

Particularly noteworthy is the fact that most competitors, except for Intermarché (+0.2%), experienced contractions in their volume sales. Casino witnessed a -0.8% drop, while Auchan and Carrefour both registered -0.2% declines. Meanwhile, the German discount giants, Lidl and Aldi, saw their market shares dip by -0.3% and -0.2%, respectively.
