The Consortium for the protection of Taleggio PDO cheese has released data on production, sales, and exports in 2021: all show signs of a recovery. The balance of 2021 is positive and growing compared to 2020, despite the aftermath of the pandemic, shutdowns, and restrictions that, as expected, still had a negative effect on the sector. Export numbers are also good, approaching pre-pandemic 2019 levels.

Annual production was 8,680 tons (vs 8,370 in 2020) equal to about 4,340,000 cheese wheels (vs 4,200,000 in 2020). This accounts for a turnover of about 97,730,200 euros (vs 94,820,000).
Exports grew by more than double-digit, reaching a 26% share of the total. About 64% of the wheels were exported to EU markets, compared to 36% shipped to non-EU countries. The tons of Taleggio PDO destined for exports were 2,257, coming very close to those recorded in 2019, i.e. before the pandemic, which was 2,312.
“We are satisfied with the signs of recovery in the supply chain,” says Lorenzo Sangiovanni, President of the Consortium for the protection of Taleggio PDO cheese. “We are reaping the benefits of the important work carried out by the Consortium and all its members who, during the last two difficult years, have worked to guarantee consumers a high-quality product. The supervisory, promotional, and communication activities promoted by the Consortium have continued, especially in foreign markets, including the in-person presence at an important trade fair such as Anuga. The positive export figures confirm our strategy”.
