In a recent radio interview on SiriusXM’s talk show “The Morning Mash Up”, members of the Italian rock band Måneskin (pictured above – @photo credit: Youtube) corrected the radio hosts on pronouncing Italian food. One of the radio hosts, Nicole Ryan asked the band, “Do you get annoyed with the way we say Italian Food?” One member of the band said, “Sometimes”.
The three hosts of the talk show each pronounced one Italian food and then asked members of the band to correct the hosts on how one is supposed to pronounce the food. Ryan started with ricotta, pronouncing it “Ruh-kaa-tuh”. The immediate response from the band was “What?” They corrected Ryan teaching her how to pronounce the cheese, “ree-KOHTT-ah”. Ryan talking to her co-hosts asked, “Did you hear that? They didn’t even know what I was talking about.” The other radio hosts asked the band how to pronounce, pappardelle and panettone.
Måneskin encountered the Italian cuisine stereotype at a recent music award show. The American Music Awards nominated the rock band for their hit song “Beggin”. In addition to being nominated, the Italian rock band also performed at the award show from Los Angeles on November 21, which was televised. Rapper Cardi B, hosted the award show and introduced the band. On stage, Cardi B was sitting at a small dining table with a dish of spaghetti and meatballs on top of a red and white checkered tablecloth. On Twitter, there was some criticism for the stereotypical portrayal of Italian culture. Including Lapo Elkann who wrote in part, “U fight against racism & stereotypes of minorities which is great and max respect. I think fueling stereotypes against others goes against the values u try to share with ur fans. That’s all.”
