A close relationship links the multinational fast food chain McDonald’s to Italian agribusiness. There are many examples for this partnership in markets abroad. McDonald’s favors Italian food outside of Italy. In fact, the multinational has recently entered into supply agreements with Italian companies abroad, thanks to the added value of some Italian raw materials. This is how the Parmigiano Reggiano PDO ‘disembarked’ five years ago in Germany, Portugal, and France yielding a value of 160 tonnes per year. Likewise, the South Tyrolean company Recla, supplies bacon used to enrich the flavour of sandwiches and burgers introduced to German McDonald’s menus. What is more, Swiss restaurants have been stocking up on extra virgin olive oil and iGreco Balsamic vinegar of Modena Pgi for three years now. The decision to focus on Italian products started with the McItaly project in 2010, with the launch of the special 100% Italian burgers to enhance local production while taking advantage of the quality.
