Companies are more committed towards the support of certified sustainable palm oil and towards a growing transparency in their supply chain. This means, in simple terms, that the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil), the international association that gathers stakeholders of the sustainable palm oil supply chain, has developed an innovative tracking system which now facilitates the identification of the mill that originates the certified sustainable palm oil. Moreover, there now exists a mobile application allowing consumers to identify their RSPO certified products.
CHALLENGE FOR INDUSTRY AND INSTITUTIONS – These innovations have been illustrated during the 4th European Round Table (Eurt), organised by the RSPO and attended by approximately 300 diplomats, representatives of the third sector, retailers, producers, investors, academics, manufacturers and distributors of palm oil. The goal of 100% sustainable certified palm oil in Europe is a challenge that faces engagements on several fronts. “The Parliament and the European Commission are seeking the most appropriate answers to the environmental issues associated with conventional production of palm oil,” commented Paolo De Castro, MEP, President of the Commission for agriculture and rural development, “Certified sustainable production is an opportunity not to be missed.”
FERRERO’S COMMITMENT – In nowadays market, the consumer does not remain silent but voices his concerns, as the food companies know. “Those who buy our products,” explains Laurent Cremona, Global Head of Marketing and Innovation – Nutella & Ferrero snacks, “are looking for something that is also in line with their own values. We have the duty to market references that reflect this need.”
