EU rules on novel food
It looks like the EU is making progress on creating new rules on novel food. The European Parliament voted to adopt new rules and they must now be approved by the Council before coming into force. Some details still need to be resolved, however, and this could cause further delay. Two parts of the compromise deal were rejected during the vote, and it is now up to the Council to tell the Parliament if it can accept a slight wording change to these rules.

The new rules would replace a 20-year-old piece of legislation and supporters hope it leads to more food and nutrition innovation across Europe. Nanotechnology was a major issue and the new regulation would include a 50% threshold as a starting point, which could be gradually reduced as scientific knowledge advances.
