Parmigiano Reggiano PDO Sees Continued Export Growth

At TuttoFood 2025 in Milan, the Parmigiano Reggiano PDO Consortium showcased the full biodiversity of the iconic Italian cheese, reinforcing its adaptability to global consumer trends. Far beyond differences in maturation, the Consortium presented a range of variants reflecting cattle breed diversity—including the Modenese White, Reggiana Red, Brown Alpine, and Italian Friesian—as well as certified products designed for niche and international markets, from Mountain and Organic Parmigiano to Kosher and Halal offerings.

The trade show provided a key platform for engaging with international retailers, distributors, and buyers, amid rising global demand for the “King of Cheeses.” According to year-end data from 2024, export volumes rose 13.7% to 72,440 tonnes, accounting for 48.7% of total sales. Strong growth was recorded in key overseas markets: the United States (+13.4%), France (+9.1%), Germany (+13.3%), the UK (+17.8%), and Canada (+24.5%).

That momentum has continued into early 2025. In the first quarter, export volumes grew a further 4.6% year-on-year, now representing 52% of total output—a significant result, particularly following a record-setting 2024. Scandinavia, the UK, and Canada were among the strongest performers. The US, however, posted a 3.7% decline, following several years of robust growth.

Looking ahead, investment in foreign markets will be essential. International demand is the future of our PDO, with exports now approaching half of total volumes,” said Nicola Bertinelli, President of the Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium. “We must create new spaces in global markets and foster the conditions for sustainable growth by working closely with key industry players.”
