La Doria’s strategies to lead the shelf stable tomato market

The leadership in private label is the result of over sixty years of hard work in close cooperation with farmers, growers. Traceability and sustainability are the Italian company’s key priorities

Italy’s La Doria is a leading company in Europe in the production of peeled and chopped tomatoes as well as among the largest Italian producers of other tomato products for retail. La Doria’s market leadership is the result of over sixty years of hard work in close cooperation with farmers, with whom the company has built a real partnership based on continuous dialogue and support. Being in close contact with growers gives the company the opportunity to buy the best 100% Italian tomato varieties every year and, thanks to their proximity to the fields, process them right after picking. Traceability and sustainability are La Doria’s key priorities in making every single product and embody the company’s commitment to customers with the ISO 22005 and Friend of The Earth certifications.

THROUGHOUT THE SUPPLY CHAIN

Through close cooperation and continuous dialogue with farmers, who act as real partners to the company, La Doria closely monitors every stage of tomato farming from sowing to harvesting and ensures quality and sustainability across the process.

The company ensures the environmental and ethical sustainability of its farming methods through specific educational projects aimed at increasing growers’ engagement in crucial issues, including reducing water consumption and increasing the bee population, vital for pollination. La Doria also supports tomato growing by offering farmers agronomic consulting services as well as training sessions on topics such as using phytosanitary products responsibly and only when absolutely necessary.

Only the best non-GMO tomato varieties are selected and, thanks to the proximity of the production facilities to the fields, the tomatoes are processed right after harvest to preserve all of their nutritional properties. 100% sustainable tomato Friends of the Earth certifies the company’s commitment to the protection of the environment (wild plant and animal life, soil and water resources) through responsible waste and energy management, as well as supply chain social responsibility.

The freshly picked tomatoes are taken to the production facilities located in Angri, Sarno, and Fisciano in the province of Salerno, and Lavello in the province of Potenza, where they undergo additional quality controls before being processed using cutting-edge production technology.

Strict controls along the entire supply chain ensure full product traceability, from field to shelf and vice-versa. The ISO 22005 quality certification testifies to La Doria’s transparency to the market as well as its ability to quickly trace back its certified products at any time.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EXPORTS AND TAILORED SOLUTIONS FOR STORE BRANDS

Foreign markets generate over 80% of La Doria’s revenues. “Our core business – reads a note from the company – is private labels, and for this reason we serve our clients not just as a supplier but as a full retail partner. As a result, we have been working on expanding our range with high-value, high-convenience products in order to cater to each country’s specific needs and local consumption habits. One of our main strengths is continuously innovating our products to better serve private labels, in line with new consumption trends. We offer our customers specific expertise in producing for private labels as well as great flexibility in customizing recipes and services”.

As far as packaging is concerned, La Doria tends to use increasingly sustainable materials and waste-reducing solutions. In 2020 they rolled out a project to convert tomato multipacks from plastic to cardboard.
