Private label is a star performer for Conad in Italy. The retailer reports that private label product sales increased 3.8% year-on-year to 2.45 bn euros. This outpaced the retailer’s overall sales increase of 1.5% for the period. The strong performance is leading Conad to expand its ranges this year, particularly the Sapori & Dintorni brand. The retailer aims to grow both the market share and value of its private label brands as Italian consumers become more cost-conscious than ever. Conad opened more than 350 stores in 2014 and intends to add another 40 Billa stores this year. Smaller formats are likely to be more of a focus for the retailer this year, as Conad has reduced the size of some of its hypermarkets.
