SIAL Canada has announced that Italy will serve as the official Country of Honour for its 24th edition, scheduled to take place from April 27 to 29, 2027, at the Enercare Centre in Toronto.
Following a record-breaking 23rd edition, Canada’s leading international food trade event returns to Ontario to connect the broader agri-food value chain, showcase sector innovations, and facilitate targeted commercial growth across North America.
Strategic bilateral trade and cultural synergy
The designation reflects a maturing commercial relationship underpinned by the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), which positions Canada as a crucial transatlantic gateway for European Union exporters. Italy currently stands as Canada’s primary European supplier of agri-food products, recognized globally for its product authenticity, supply chain traceability, culinary tradition, and high capacity for manufacturing innovation—qualities further underscored by the inclusion of Italian cuisine on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
The choice of Toronto as the host venue provides a natural demographic anchor for the initiative. Ontario is home to 59% of Canadians of Italian descent, with 445,000 residing within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), offering exhibitors direct access to an established and discerning consumer base.
Executive insights and industry leadership
Leadership from economic development agencies, trade representatives, and government officials highlighted the strategic alignment driving the partnership.
Carlo Angelo Bocchi, Director of the Italian Trade Agency (ICE) offices in Canada, said: “The Italian agri-food sector is currently experiencing a very positive growth phase in Canada, and Italy’s designation as Country of Honour at SIAL Canada 2027 comes at a particularly favourable time for our companies. SIAL Canada is the country’s leading trade show for the agri-food sector and represents a key opportunity to strengthen and consolidate Italy’s presence in the Canadian market.”
Donato Cinelli, President of Universal Marketing and Exclusive Agent for the SIAL Network in Italy, said that “Italy’s designation as ‘Country of Honour’ at SIAL Canada 2027 is a great source of satisfaction for us. This distinction is further recognition of the work we have been doing for years to strengthen the presence of Italian agri-food products — Made in Italy — in North America. SIAL Canada is an essential platform for this market, and we are proud to have supported Italian companies in their development and growth in Canada for many years.”
The Honourable Heath MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, concluded: “Italy is a leading partner for Canada in the agri-food sector. Beyond our trade ties, our two countries share a deep commitment to food excellence and a strong appreciation for the expertise and know-how of those who produce high-quality food. By designating Italy as Country of Honour at SIAL Canada in 2027, SIAL Canada is helping bring businesses in our two countries closer together and creating new opportunities for growth with Italy and across the European market.”
Programming highlights and industrial focus
The 2027 showcase will feature dedicated Italian programming throughout its schedule, including specialized award categories such as the “Best Italian Product” Medal within the SIAL Innovation competition and the “Best Italian Cheese” award as part of the International Cheese Competition (open to both exhibitors and non-exhibitors globally).
In addition to celebrating regional heritage, SIAL Canada 2027 will introduce targeted operational and market-focused zones:
- The Superfood Pavilion: A new dedicated space designed to address shifting dietary preferences by featuring functional foods, high-fiber and high-protein items, and nutrient-dense formulations.
- Food Processing and Co-Manufacturing Sector: A specialized area focused on industrial modernization, automation, supply chain resilience, and productivity enhancements, aligning directly with Canadian federal manufacturing strategies.
