Despite the complexities of the post-Brexit trading landscape, Italian food and beverage exports to the United Kingdom remain a pillar of the bilateral economic relationship. According to the latest data from the Economic Observatory of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), updated in June 2026, the trade exchange reached €34.5 billion in 2025.

The dominance of food and beverage

The Italian agrifood sector continues to lead the way in trade relations. Food, beverages, and tobacco represented the largest export category from Italy to the UK in 2025, valued at €4.56 billion. This sector accounts for 16.9% of all Italian exports to the British market, underscoring the enduring popularity of Italian culinary excellence among UK consumers.

Strategic market positioning

The UK currently ranks as Italy’s sixth-largest export market, representing 4% of total Italian exports during the first quarter of 2026. Conversely, Italy maintains its status as the seventh-largest supplier to the UK, holding a 3.3% share of the import market. While competition from European neighbors like Germany and France remains robust, the quality and prestige of PDO and PGI products continue to secure Italy’s position.

To navigate shifting regulatory conditions and strengthen commercial ties, specialized initiatives such as OpportunItaly have been developed. These programs are designed to facilitate deeper cooperation between Italian producers and UK buyers, ensuring that the momentum in trade remains positive for the years ahead.
