The Chianti wine Consortium is returning to Canada with a two-day programme designed to deepen the market’s understanding of one of Italy’s best-known wine denominations.
On August 31 in Toronto and September 1 in Montréal, the Consortium will host two institutional masterclasses for importers, wine professionals, journalists, and industry operators. The sessions will focus on the Chianti territory, its sub-zones, and the diverse expressions of Sangiovese, the denomination’s signature grape.
The initiative marks the Consortium’s third such programme in Canada, following the launch of the project in 2024, and underlines the country’s importance as a market for Chianti and for the wider promotion of Italian wine.
“Canada continues to prove to be a particularly receptive market for Chianti,” says Giovanni Busi, President of the Consortium. “Returning for the third time with these masterclasses means consolidating a promotional path based on wine culture and the training of professionals. Talking about Chianti wine today means talking about a denomination that knows how to evolve without losing its identity, capable of expressing different nuances through its territories, sub-zones, and the winemaking heritage that makes it unique.”
From Toronto to Montréal
The first event will take place on August 31 at Aria Ristorante in Toronto. The masterclass, titled “Chianti: The Geometry of Terroir. Mapping the Diversity, Sub-zones, and Soul of Tuscany’s Most Iconic Appellation,” will be led by Megha Jandhyala.
Participants will be taken through a tasting of five Chianti DOCG wines, selected to illustrate the characteristics of the denomination, its territory and its sub-zones. The session is intended to provide a more detailed understanding of the geographical and stylistic diversity behind Chianti.
The programme will continue the following day in Montréal. On September 1, the Institut de tourisme et d’hôtellerie du Québec (ITHQ) will host the second masterclass, titled “La Renaissance du Chianti: l’évolution d’un classique contemporain. Altitude, fraîcheur et expression moderne du Sangiovese et de ses cépages apparentés.”
The session will be conducted by Master of Wine Jacky Blisson and will examine the evolution of the denomination and contemporary interpretations of Sangiovese. The programme will include a representative tasting highlighting Chianti, its territory, and its sub-zones.
