US Consul General Douglass Benning (pictured, left) recently visited the Bertinelli agricultural estate in Noceto, marking a significant step in reinforcing the bond between the United States and the Parmigiano Reggiano PDO supply chain. During the visit, the diplomat explored production facilities and participated in a sensory analysis of various maturations, engaging in a strategic dialogue with Consortium President Nicola Bertinelli (pictured, right).

A flourishing export market

The meeting highlighted the impressive performance of the US market, which remains the primary destination for Parmigiano Reggiano PDO. In the first five months of 2026, exports grew by 2.5%, reaching approximately 7,000 tons. This sustained demand underscores the loyalty of American consumers, despite the geopolitical complexities and ongoing tariff negotiations. The conversation focused on the role of the newly established Parmigiano Reggiano USA Corporation, designed to streamline relations with distributors, retailers, and local stakeholders.

Educational initiatives and tourism

Beyond commercial figures, the Consortium is prioritizing academic and nutritional research. The initiative aims to leverage the PDO’s nutritional profile to foster deeper institutional cooperation. Furthermore, a major focus was placed on food tourism. Through the Vivi Parmigiano Reggiano project, the organization plans to triple tourist traffic to its dairies, targeting 300,000 annual visits by 2029 to boost local development.

The United States is not just our top export market; it is a vital partner for building long-term relationships,” stated President Bertinelli. By promoting the culture of authentic Italian ingredients—a key component of the campaign for the Cucina Italiana UNESCO candidacy—the Consortium seeks to create lasting value across the entire transatlantic supply chain.
