Italy has further solidified its status as a global leader in quality agri-food production with the official EU registration of two new Geographical Indications. The Peperoncino di Calabria PGI (Calabrian chili pepper) and the Zampina di Sammichele di Bari PGI were formally added to the European register on June 11, 2026, marking a significant milestone for the Italian PDO economy.

A commitment to regional identity

These two products are deeply rooted in their respective territories. The Calabrian chili pepper serves as a pillar of regional agricultural identity, while the Zampina sausage represents a unique communal tradition from Apulia, celebrated for its specific artisanal production process involving bovine and ovine meat, aged cheese, and fresh tomatoes. According to data from the Qualivita Observatory, these additions bring Italy to a total of 892 recognized food, wine, and spirits products.

Growth of the Italian Geographical Indication model

Mauro Rosati, Director General of the Qualivita Foundation (the Italian association dedicated to PGI and PDO F&B products), emphasized that the recognition of these products highlights the vitality of the Italian model. This system valorizes large production chains and protects products deeply ingrained in local cultures and territorial economies. With these new registrations, the Apulian sector now boasts 61 combined PDO and PGI denominations, while Calabria reaches 42.

Economic impact and market potential

The registration of these PGI labels provides producers with increased protection and market recognition, essential for international distributors seeking authentic, high-quality Italian goods. As the Italian PDO economy continues to expand, these regional specialties are well-positioned to meet the growing global demand for products with a clear, verifiable, and prestigious provenance.
