Buffalo mozzarella from Campania is tightening its grip on Germany. At Anuga 2025, Europe’s biggest food fair, running 4–8 October in Cologne, the Consortium—the body that protects the Mozzarella di Bufala Campana PDO—has rolled out a coordinated campaign built on three pillars: promotion at the fair itself, a series of “off-events” for stakeholders and enthusiasts, and a targeted advertising push.

Germany is the cheese’s second-largest export market after France. Ahead of the 2025 edition of Anuga, the Consorzio has launched an outdoor campaign in Berlin and Cologne’s underground stations, in partnership with the Ricotta di Bufala Campana PDO and Prosciutto San Daniele PDO Consortia. Under the banner “Dolce Vita,” the billboards showcase Italy’s “white gold” as shorthand for la dolce vita itself.

At Anuga, buffalo mozzarella will appear at Afidop’s collective stand (Hall 10.1, Stand G070–G078), with tastings and live cooking sessions. Among the novelties is a recipe by chef Riccardo Cogliano, combining mozzarella with raspberries and basil oil (5–7 October). On 6 October, the cheese will star at an evening dedicated to Italian dairy, while on 7 October, an “off-salon” event at Cologne’s historic brewery Zur Malzmühle will pair mozzarella with German cuisine.

We are stepping up investment in Germany, which is a strategic market for our product,” says Consortium president Domenico Raimondo. Director Pier Maria Saccani adds that “one mozzarella in three ends up abroad; Germany alone absorbs 15.4% of exports, ranking second only to France, with strong growth potential even in today’s complex economic climate.”

According to Nomisma research firm, Germany imported €168.9m worth of fresh Italian cheeses in 2024—9% of the sector’s total exports—up 9.8% on the previous year.
